At the instigation of the National Socialist Party the Bauhaus was closed in 1932 and the Masters' Houses let to others. When the City of Dessau sold the Masters' Houses to the Junkers' factory they imposed on them the condition that "the outer form of these houses should now be changed so that the alien building forms are removed from the town's appearance." The rebuilding included, inter alia, the studio windows and prominent chimneys that were added later. These considerably altered the appearance of the Masters' Houses.

In the second world war Gropius' house and Moholy-Nagy's half of the neighbouring semi-detached house were destroyed in an air raid. The remaining houses were used as dwellings. The Feininger House also served as a hospital.
